The man is an outstanding actor who has already played a real-life person this year with his excellent portrayal of Jim Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. It wraps you into the story and characters while also having fantastic renditions of songs such as “30/90,” “Sunday,” and “Come to Your Senses.” “Boho Days” is a short little number with no music attached to it, all sung acapella, and it is phenomenal.īut what is the best part of this movie? Andrew Garfield. The film doesn’t rely too much on either one instead, story and music work hand in hand to create an experience like no other with this film.

This movie is a prime example of a film that uses music and songs to complement a compelling story. At its core, it’s a film about a struggling artist in the days before he turns 30 years old, but above everything, it’s a musical-and a damn good one too. Miranda’s storytelling has so much passion, and you can feel his desire to tribute Larson with the film based on his fascinating life. This film is a love letter to musical theater made for theater lovers by theater lovers. It’s refreshing to see a movie that does such an excellent job of catering to its audience. Miranda makes his feature directorial debut with a film based on the man behind the Broadway musical sensation, Rent. It’s been a hell of a year for director Lin Manuel-Miranda, who, just in 2021, has had his music featured in In the Heights, Vivo, and Encanto. This film is an adaptation of an autobiographical musical Larson wrote and performed off-off-Broadway in 1990. This is the opening musical number of tick, tick…BOOM!, a biographical musical drama starring Andrew Garfield as Larson, an aspiring theatre composer going through a quarter-life crisis as he approaches his 30th birthday and feels he has not accomplished his dream. Jonathan Larson sings these lyrics, one hand in the air and the other drumming on piano keys. “Tick, Tick… Boom!” is not only an extremely entertaining viewing experience, but a touching tribute to one of Broadway's most important composers and a love letter to the theatre world.Stop the clock, take time out, time to regroup before you lose the bout. Whether you are a longtime theatre lover or not, there is something to like about “Tick, Tick… Boom!” for everyone, whether it is Lin-Manuel Miranda theater-influenced directing, catchy musical numbers or Garfield's remarkable acting. Even when other elements of the film appeared to be lacking, Garfield carried the film on his back while delivering one of the best performances of his career to date. Stealing the spotlight almost every moment he is on screen, Garfield offers a compelling and bittersweet portrayal of the real-life composer.That's not to mention a surprisingly impressive singing performance, something which Garfield learned and worked on specifically for the role. Garfield perfectly embodies the role of a struggling artist with a quirky and eccentric personality that you cannot help but empathize with. While as a narrative the film does struggle a bit in terms of pacing and maintaining interest, none of this is due to Garfield as he is absolutely phenomenal from start to finish. Even if these creative choices held the film back slightly, Miranda’s creative choices were still commendable.Īlthough this film has its flaws and is centered around the realm of musical theatre, there is much to like for all audiences, most prominent being the incredibly charismatic performance of Garfield as Jonathan Larson. The film's anticlimactic voiceover end also left a bit to be desired in terms of resolution. Unfortunately, the overall cohesiveness of the film does suffer as a result, often sacrificing some of its most exciting emotional beats and plot points. This can be slightly confusing at first, but once you understood what was going on it gave the film a memorable feel. The film is told through Larson’s perspective and narration, cutting back and forth between the events themselves and a ‘live’ performance of the play “Tick, Tick… Boom!” at the same time. It does, however, differ from most general narrative films in its unique story structure and pacing. Its set design, musical numbers, choreography and cinematography all mimic that of theatrical Broadway productions. The film contains many of the stereotypical conventions of movie musicals.
